Winter Garden Newsletter
Pender Pines Winter Gardening Newsletter
This years weather has been especially good for establishing our winter gardens. Vegetables have been especially prolific. Cool weather plants such as these broccoli and purple cauliflower photographed this week are thriving. I place a cover over them on real cold nights. Lettuce can be grown in successive crops all winter without frost cloth as protection.

Pansies and violas are thriving. They love sunny cool days. This years flowers are even larger than usual. Beds planted this Fall are looking great.

Winter is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. They will start to establish before the hot weather arrives and will need less maintenance at this time of year. Winter and early Spring blooming shrubs like Camellias, Forsythia and flowering Quince can raise your spirits on cold Winter days.

Many cleanup tasks can be done now, as well as splitting perennials. Pruning of most landscape plants should be done in earnest in late January.
Our first seminar this year “How to Prune” will be held on Saturday, January 21 at both 10am and 2pm. Call the store 910-270-2706 or emailpenderpines@gmail.com to save a place. If you email please indicate how many are coming and for what time.
Have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy your Winter gardens, Gary
